SOFT BALLS, AND THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE
I participated, with other players, in a pickleball demonstration at the ‘OAK BAY TENNIS CLUB’ on Saturday. We used a new type of ball. I’m not sure how many of you have tried the ‘keep the neighbors happy’ pickleball. It’s foam on the inside, and some sort of rubber material on the outside. It has no holes, and is slightly smaller than an outdoor pickleball. In play it’s very quiet. Which is kind of eerie? I hit the ball hard. Instead of a ‘pop’, there was only a muted ‘oomph’. It threw off my timing (which isn’t hard to do). However, I did enjoy the afternoon’s play, and I brought an ‘Onix’ ball home with me. Who knows, maybe if I get insomnia, I can get up in the middle of the night and hit the ‘Quiet Ball’ around my condo.
THE CHALLENGE COURT
Since I decided to try writing a column on pickleball, I wondered, what should I call it? These were some of my ideas:
- PICKLED AND BAKER
- PICKLE-WIT PAPERS
- PICKLEDLAND NOTES
- VIC PICKLING NEWS
- THE SHOT DISTURBER
I looked over the list…….’hmmm, I thought. Nothing very inspiring.’ I wanted something different. Pickleball is a relatively young sport. Most of us, I’m sure, have only been playing for a few years. It’s still not a well known sport among the general public. Personally, I started playing two and a half years ago. I was looking for something to fill my time, when I was staying at a resort in Palm Desert. Then pickleball became more important to me. Now I have to face the fact. I’m an addict! A picklehead!!! Since I can’t play every day, (my joints rebel), I want to try writing about the sport. Maybe, I think, that will soothe my craving for more pickle. Therefore, I will challenge myself to write something interesting each week.
I introduce to you my column. I call it:
THE CHALLENGE COURT.
These are some of the ideas I’m working on for future columns:
- TIPS AND GRIPS – I will discuss the difficulty in adjusting, and making changes to your game.
- SHANGRI-LA – Now that the snowbirds have flown home, I’m wondering which resort down south is ‘the’ pickleball Mecca.
- NICKNAMES, AND WHO WE ARE AS PLAYERS – This will be about visualization, and getting in the zone.
I would appreciate any feedback, and in the meantime,
