Starting this week, we have another place to pickle in Victoria. Many players went there last summer– it was a well attended and popular venue… Below is the info:
Location – Victoria Curling Club 1952 Quadra St.
Time – Tuesdays and Thursdays 9am – noon
Charge – $5 drop in fee, everyone welcome.
Bonus – The Good Fellow Cafe is in the same building. It’s open Mon-Fri 8am-3pm…you can have a snack, brecky or lunch before or after your game.
There are six courts, and, for those who were complaining about them,…yes, the courts are now relined so there is more separation between the front three and the back three courts.
I went to these sessions quite often last year. This year, the times conflict with my outdoor pb at Carnarvon Park, but I plan to go to the Curling Club once in a while anyway. One of the best things about the place is the person who is the facilitator….Dave McNeill does a super job in this role, and he is also is generous in giving free tips and helping players with their games….Be sure to talk to Dave about any pickle problem your having. He has great insights on proper technique. I did an interview with Dave McNeill last year, and you can see his mini-bio by going in the CC archives from April 26th, 2015.
Coming soon….I may have some info about Mark Renneson and a pickleball clinic at the Curling Club in July!
Outdoor Places To Play
If you are looking for another place to play, there is a group that I have organized that meets Sundays from 4pm-6:30pm at McMinn Park (off Maplegrove St.). This is an ”everyone welcome” get together…. McMinn is a great place to hit in the nice weather. The courts are shaded and it is often the calmest place to play in our ”windy city”. The courts are multi use, so we have to share the available spaces with tennis players, but so far that hasn’t been a problem….I hope to see you there.
Robert Williams and Sandy Kirk are also promoting McMinn at 9am on Mondays and Thursdays. You can reach the guys by email if you want to join their group:
For those of you are wondering, you can usually get a game in with our Oak Bay Group that plays at Carnarvon Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am – noon. We have a capped number of players, but so far there has been room for extra people. The fee is $4 for drop inners.
Coming in a future edition, I hope to have an announcement about an Oak Bay Pickleball Day at Carnarvon Park.
For those of you who are Tolmie Park fans, you should know that Saanich will soon be closing the place!…Don’t worry though… It’s just a temporary closure while they make some improvements. Included in the project will be the renovation to convert one of the multi use tennis courts into 2 pickleball courts!!…Hooray!!…We will finally have outdoor designated pb courts in Victoria!!..Thanks to everyone that went to the Saanich meetings and filled out the forms to lobby for Tolmie pickleball.
As you may know, I do this blog as a hobby….I only send out a post when I feel like putting out the effort to write something picklely. It’s so summery outside that I have been somewhat distracted lately, but don’t be concerned. I should get motivated to do more editions in good time. I have made some great contacts with interesting pro players and I plan on doing more interviews soon….’Till then,
Thanks for the game,
